A long journey to find radical truth and authenticity

I'm not one for long prologues or setups so I'll just jump right into it. My name is Emily, I can inhabit many roles depending on the time and place. I am a mother, wife, doula, Reiki Master, herbalist, alchemist, business owner and general human being.
I said no to a lot of roles that didn't feel honest to find this one. Roles that were comfortable enough to settle in forever but I always found myself planning my escape.
Before going into birth work I was a museum educator, a historic tour guide, a legal assistant, an administrator at the Sickle Cell Foundation, a Delta flight attendant, and a market analyst. No matter what I did I found myself more interested in health, wellness, spirituality, and learning than I did whatever I was doing. I was underutilized, bored, and resentful of the time I was missing that I wanted to spend on what I was truly passionate about.
I found my path to healing through birth. And as the most cliche doula stories usually begin, mine also began with Ina May Gaskin's book Spiritual Midwifery. If you are interested in birth and haven't read that book I can't recommend it enough, and I wouldn't be who I am today without it. After discovering what magic birth was I wanted to really dive into the process. I wanted to witness, I wanted to hold space, I wanted to empower, and I wanted to learn.
I enrolled in DONA doula training and eventually became a midwife assistant as well. I loved the community, and the work I was doing. It was the first time I felt honest in my work, and felt like I was actually making a difference. I was amazed by the way energy changed in a birthing space. I also pretty quickly became exhausted. Being on call is a completely different lifestyle compared to my very scheduled life before. This is when I really had to change my lifestyle and care for myself on a whole new level. I couldn't care for these families with my batteries running on empty.
I was so excited to realize there was a whole world of traditional healing and wellness that had been hidden in plain sight my whole life. I learned about herbalism, ayurveda, acupuncture, Reiki, breath work, and meditation.
I have since sought to master these arts, and I'm continuously devouring as much information as I can get my hands on. I later met my husband, got married, and had my son Ben who is the light of my life and my greatest teacher. Now I am passionate about supporting families through education, and postpartum support. I want to share everything I've learned, and be present for the people I can.
I love postpartum work! It is such a vulnerable and liminal space. I provide ayurvedic cooking, emotional support, and generally try to fill whatever needs I can whether it's laundry, dishes, or conversation and connection. In this blog I'm going to share a lot about what I've learned from different healing modalities, and also what I've gleaned from my experiences. My hope is that it will resonate with someone and provide a clue to the mystery that is you. I have so many people to thank for guiding me on my path to myself. The right words were said, and hints were given that led me to birthwork, plant medicine, and everything that I now know. Love to all who read this! Stay tuned for lots more info soon!
